Hi! My name is Rachel. I would like to share my experiences as a teacher new to third grade. It's my fifth year teaching: I spent my first three years in a pre-k CWC and started a kindergarten room from scratch last year. This year, I moved back to my home town to be close to my wonderful family and to begin life with my fiancee, Jay. I hope you find some ideas and inspiration in my blog! Enjoy!
I wanted something that students could do if they got done early that would promote higher order thinking. I found this idea. Students have an answer to a word problem, and they create the problem themselves. It's great because they can really take ownership of their work, and no two answers will be the same. The student writes their version of 'the problem' on a post it note, and then sticks it on their class number. Other students can explore other people's problems as well to gain new perspectives. The answer is changed weekly.
Doo Doo Doo Looking out my Front Door...Here's our front door. Do you like the duct tape? I'm classy like that. (I actually like the color it adds.) Notice the reflections of our day poster...every day students write a short reflection of their day on a post it and put it on their class number. This helps me to really get to know my students, answer any questions, etc. They have many questions to choose from or can write whatever they'd like. I can quickly look at it to see which number/student has not reflected yet.
Here is a sampling of the questions students can answer (they are written on the blue circles) "Summarize your math lesson for the day. What was the most important thing to remember?" "When your parents ask you 'What did you learn at school today?' what are you going to say?" "If today were a color, what color would it be? Give three examples why it would be that color." "Did something happen today that you are going to remember for a long time? What was it?" "Is there something that you didn't understand from our lessons today? Are there any questions I can help you answer tomorrow?"

I hope that you enjoyed this quick preview/tour of my room. I took these pictures two weeks ago and I have already added so many more "small touches" that I don't want to upload any more right now until I can take new ones. The next blog post will be about OPEN HOUSE! YAY! Feel free to leave any comments or questions on the "Open House" page. You can also check out my teacherspayteachers.com site. I have mostly things for pre-k to first on there now, but will be adding more and more for third grade as I create it. :) http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Terrific-Teachings |
